MX77 Connectors Prominently Used in Battery Systems

In the united effort to combat global warming, electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV) are increasingly being marketed worldwide with a significantly smaller carbon footprint than conventional vehicles. At what point does the automotive manufacturer developing EV and PHEV select the best suited automotive connector to be adopted?

The following section explains some of the prominent features JAE connectors have to offer, including shared experience from the design engineer of a well-known car manufacturer who have chosen to adopt the MX77 Series.

Manufacturer Feedback in Adopting the MX77 Series

We asked a leading car manufacturer using the MX77 Series to share their benefits of JAE connector adoption. The general response is as follows.

Customer Voice of Adopted MX77 Series

The newly developed vehicle model is an EV equipped with a new battery management system (BMS). The problem is the increasing number of equipped devices adds vehicle weight and takes away from cabin space. By making the equipped devices smaller and lighter, the entire vehicle becomes lighter while optimizing cabin space. As the number of installed devices increases, the number of connectors and cables connecting them also increases. From this, there is a need to reduce cable weight by using smaller diameter wires. When we searched for a small connector on the website to realize a wider cabin space and lighter weight, there were many connectors, but we were unable to find connectors that combine miniaturization and durability to withstand the automotive environment.

Therefore, we consulted with JAE‘s sales representative and received an introduction to the MX77 Series. We chose this product because it is compact, low-height and offers smaller diameter wire options with sufficient terminal retention force. We also chose it because it helps reduce temperature rise when compared to MX34 Series products. The MX77 Series met our needs as an automotive connector and was easy to use for solving our problem correctly.

Benefits of MX77 Series

  • Excels in Miniaturization, Low-Profile, and Terminal Retention Strength

As more and more equipment is installed onto the vehicle and wider cabin space is secured, the demand for miniaturization of in-vehicle equipment also increases. Therefore, the connectors designed onto the equipment need to be smaller and low-profile while maintaining substantial terminal retention force. The MX77 Series has a measured terminal retention force of 50N and uses 0.4 mm size contact terminals. For comparison, 0.5 mm size contact terminals measure a spec minimum terminal retention force of 30N. This means the MX77 Series has equivalent or higher terminal retention force. The size of the MX77 Series 0.4 mm contact terminal is reduced by up to 37% when compared to our 0.64 mm contact terminal, making the MX77 Series connector solution more compact.

  • Control of Temperature Rise

The MX77 Series in BMS are used to monitor voltage, therefore it is important to have reduced temperature rise. Temperature increases also affect the life of the battery and are very important due to the fact that optimal performance must be achieved to extend battery life. By adopting high heat-dissipating material for the pin terminals, which has been studied to be an area of greater temperature rise when compared to socket terminals, temperature rise is reduced under the same current-carrying conditions as the widely used 0.64 mm tab size for MX34 (Fig. 1).
