We found that JAE has a proven track record for manufacturing numerous small connectors used in smartwatches. When we asked about the problems we were facing with our new smartwatch, they proposed the WP56DK Series.”
The WP56DK Series is a 0.3mm pitch board-to-board connector in which the overall length has been greatly reduced by decreasing the contact pitch by 0.05mm compared to the conventional 0.35mm pitch products. The development engineer was concerned that the miniaturization of the connector would lead to several problems such as a reduction in strength, difficulty in alignment during assembly, and poor yield when mounting and soldering to the boards due to the narrow pitch. However, the WP56DK Series had specific design features to ensure robustness such as additional metal fittings that act as armor for the connector and also improved alignment with a wider guiding structure.
“For the mounting process, a detailed evaluation report helped us understand that production was possible without implementing major changes to the existing PCB mounting line, helping to resolve this concern. Additionally, we were impressed by the fact that the product was already in mass production and had been adopted in similar devices. We felt that we could use it with confidence given its previous success.”
The design team quickly simulated electrical performance with the S-parameters that were available , and received samples immediately for evaluation. The performance and quality of the WP56DK Series were confirmed to be at an excellent standard.
With the WP56DK series, the design team was able to resolve the biggest issue they were facing with mounting space. In addition, the availability of extensive data such as S-parameters, allowed them to adopt the connector with more confidence than other products that didn’t have such data available. They also received suggestions on potential issues related to connectors including inspection methods.
This company is now making steady progress in development with support from JAE.
