USB Type-C® Compatible DX07 Series Waterproof Receptacle with Improved Short Circuit Resistance Now Available

Japan Aviation Electronics Industry, Ltd. (JAE) has added a new model to its lineup of DX07 Series waterproof receptacle connectors, which are compatible with the USB Type-C standard interface. This new product reduces the risk of short circuits caused by liquid ingress into the connector area, which can lead to excessive heat generation and potentially fire.

Overview

The USB Type-C connector has become widely adopted as a standard interface in smartphones, PCs, AV equipment, gaming consoles, and other devices. Smartphones and other portable devices must survive exposure to various environments, creating a strong need for many to have sealing against water ingress. To prevent malfunctions and accidents, there is an increasing demand for higher waterproof ratings and measures to address the risk of heat generation and fire caused by liquid ingress into the connector mating area. In response to these needs, our company offers USB Type-C compatible receptacle connectors with a unique waterproof structure using insert molding. These connectors provide high waterproof performance that meet IPX8 requirements (submersion at 1.5 meters for 30 minutes) even after reflow.

We have redesigned the internal structure of the connector to reduce the risk of excessive heat generation, which can lead to a fire, caused by liquid ingress into the mating area. The new product maintains the high level of waterproof performance while enhancing resistance to short circuits. To reduce the risk of short circuits between electrically conductive components when exposed to liquids, it is necessary to secure a greater distance between the conductive components inside the connector. This product eliminates as much conductive materials from the liquid ingress paths as possible, extending the creepage distance (the surface insulation distance between conductive components) to approximately 2.3 times that of previous models. This improvement reduces the occurrence of shorts when there is moisture in the connector mating area by about 30%. (According to JAE test results)
