Environmental Report 2013

Building a More Sustainable Society

Environmental Commitment in a Difficult Economy

In FY 2012, the global economic recovery slowed in both developed and developing nations. This included the resurgent European financial crisis in the first half of the year, which had a negative impact on exports from developing nations. In the second half the year, economic stimulus measures, such as monetary easing in various countries, began calming the situation in Europe and also had a limited but positive impact in the U.S. and other countries. Meanwhile, the Japanese economy had been showing signs of bottoming out thanks to recovering stock prices and the correction in the over-valued yen, but the lingering effects of low stock prices, the still over-valued yen, and deflation prevented a full recovery from the economic downturn.
Under the JAE Group's environmental commitment to “contributing to the attainment of a prosperous, sustainable, recycling-based society by fulfilling its corporate social responsibility through environmentally friendly business activities and respect for the natural environment and biological diversity,“ the Group is working hard to protect the environment while also creating the business success needed to make its environmental efforts sustainable.

JAE's Environmental Activities

As part of its efforts against climate change, the central environmental issue facing our planet, the JAE Group is pursuing initiatives in the areas of environmental awareness, energy savings, and the efficient use of raw materials and chemical substances. The Group also continued the electrical/electronics industry's voluntary action plan for reducing CO2 emissions through FY 2012 and even set its own higher goals that resulted in major reductions.
Looking forward to FY 2013 and beyond, the JAE Group has already declared its intent to take part in the Action Plan of the Industries of Electrical and Electronics on a Low Carbon Society, a medium-to-long-term benchmark with an eye on 2020. And at the Akishima Plant, the Group's production base in Tokyo, efforts are underway to fight climate change even harder by adding additional benchmarks under the Tokyo Cap-and-Trade Program.
In an effort to prevent soil and groundwater contamination, the JAE Group is standardizing the structure, inspection, and management guidelines for chemical-related plant facilities within the domestic Group, assessing and improving facilities, and lowering environmental risks.
The popularization of products with a low environmental impact is becoming even more important in achieving a sustainable society. The JAE Group is moving forward with developments that take the global environment into account, including energy and resource conservation, and is working hard to offer customers in all industries, including telecommunications, computing, automobile, and industrial equipment, parts that can contribute to a lower environmental impact.
Meanwhile, the JAE Group Forest, established in 2004 in Okutama-machi, Tokyo, has been raising the environmental awareness of Group employees by allowing them to participate in forest preservation efforts. A variety of wildlife can be seen as the seasons change, putting a more real and close-up perspective on protecting the environment. While it is said that it takes 60 years to develop a forest, the JAE Group will actually be ushering in its 60th anniversary this year thanks to everyone's hard work, and we would like to continue to carefully nurture the forest as a symbol of the company's continuing environmental commitment.
The JAE Group will continue to produce environmentally friendly products and promote ongoing environmental activities through our social contribution initiatives, and we would like to ask for your support in these efforts.
