Environmental Report 2016

Building a More Sustainable Society

Environmental Management

At the JAE Group, we are determined to ensure that all of our corporate activities are conducted with respect for the natural environment and biodiversity.

Still fresh in our memory is the record-setting heat wave which scorched Japan in the summer of 2015. Moreover, for the first time in history, in June, the global average concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere exceeded 400ppm, crossing a global warming crisis threshold. In recent years, there have been a number of major natural disasters related directly or indirectly to the progress of climate change. Thus, we believe that one of the most important duties of a company is to take action in the fight against global warming. All the companies of the JAE Group, while sustainably providing society with improved products, strive to contribute to society by taking action that reduces the environmental impact of their business activities while also raising corporate value.

Environmental Activities

Within the framework of corporate social responsibility (CSR), JAE's environmental management activities start with basic proactive initiatives designed to ensure that no harmful substances are emitted in the course of production activities. At the same time, it goes without saying that we are expected to respond to new issues, such as how to address biodiversity concerns and protect the other blessings that nature provides, with an awareness of the entire natural world, as well as global warming. At the JAE Group, we articulate our goals and move forward with initiatives to address these issues based on our environmental policy.

With regard to countermeasures to mitigate global warming, the use of energy has a huge impact. In initiatives to date, we have installed LED lighting and adopted efficient air conditioning equipment at newly constructed plants, and at existing plants, steadily converted to energy-efficient equipment and switched to LED lighting for guidance illumination, along with other measures. Moreover, by raising productivity in the manufacturing process, we have boosted efficiency in energy usage. Furthermore, in April 2015, in response to Japan's revised Fluorocarbons Recovery and Destruction Law, which aims to mitigate global warming as well as to halt destruction of the ozone layer, the JAE Group has developed and put in place a control process that securely manages verification and controls leakage.

Among the other environmental initiatives we have taken to lower our overall environmental impact are ensuring thorough adherence to environmental regulations, promoting green procurement, designing eco-friendly products, and working to reduce chemical substances and waste materials.

As themes for 2015, we intend to focus on recycling waste materials as well as water. Having raised the awareness that waste materials are resources, and taken steps to improve the quality of this recycling, we have achieved a recycling rate as high as 99.8%. In light of this, we have increased our recycling rate goal from "over 99%" to "over 99.5%."

Turning to water resources, our accomplishments include the use of recycled plating processing solution, as well as a rainwater storage and permeation tank installed to prevent flooding of nearby roads in times of rain, and the replenishment of the underground watershed through the JAE Group Forest.

The JAE Group Forest was established in 2004 as a symbol of the Group's environmental policies. The Akishima Plant has benefitted from groundwater that flows through the JAE Group Forest, which contributes 6% of the plant's annual water usage.

In addition to the original goals of forest preservation, replenishing the watershed and absorbing CO2, the JAE Group Forest is also being used to promote awareness of biodiversity and foster environmental consciousness among employees via hands-on learning during on-site activities aimed at preserving the forest. We would like to continue to build upon this cornerstone of JAE's environmental activities.

The JAE Group will continue to produce environmentally friendly products and promote ongoing environmental activities through its social contribution initiatives.

In closing, please let me request your continued understanding and support.
