Environmental Report 2010

Group Sites (Japan/Overseas)

This page provides an introduction to the FY 2009 activities of a select number of group sites.

●JAE Hirosaki, Ltd. (HAE)

JAE Hirosaki has achieved all five of the environmental targets it set, i.e., measures against climate change (CO2 reduction), reducing raw material use, reducing chemical substances, lowering industrial waste, and promoting green procurement. In its measures against climate change in particular, the company is intensifying its efforts, including revising its target figure by some 50% over its initial plan during the middle of the year. It is also contributing to the lowering of industrial waste, through not only simple reductions, but by also reducing the use of raw materials. The company participated in the "cool biz" and "warm biz" programs as well at the "lights down" campaign, and for the first time, joined the "let's warm up" campaign that Hokkaido, Aomori, Akita, and Iwate prefectures are pursuing in unison. The company is also continuing activities that contribute locally, including cleanup efforts around the company, and workshops taught by outside instructors on eco-driving that employs vehicles fitted with fuel consumption gauges.

●JAE Yamagata, Ltd. (YAE)
JAE Yamagata achieved all the environmental targets it had been pursuing. Of particular note was its promotion of cuts in CO2 emission caused by energy use as part of its measures against climate change. Specifically, the company installed ducts that forcibly directed exhaust heat generated by production equipment in the summer to the outside. This cut air-conditioning load and reduced energy consumption by improving exhaust efficiency so that heat would not build up within plants. And in winter, it did the opposite by directing the exhaust heat of production equipment into plants to supplement the heating system. This resulted in a dramatic cut in heavy oil consumption over the previous year.

●JAE Fuji, Ltd. (FAE)
JAE Fuji has achieved all the environmental targets it set, i.e., reducing CO2 emissions, reducing raw material use, reducing chemical substances, lowering industrial waste, and promoting green procurement. It achieved its FY target for CO2 reduction by improving business processes. In FY 2010, the company will continue with measures against climate change (CO2 reduction) as its main target. While FY 2009 plans called for environmental beatification effort with a middle school in the city, it had to be canceled due to a flu epidemic.

●JAE Shinshu, Ltd. (SAE)
From FY 2008 onward, production fell dramatically due to the effects of the global economic downturn, and economic performance in terms of the amount of energy and chemical materials input and the amount of waste output remained low, but in measures against climate change (CO2 reduction), the company is still positioning environmental management as one its key issues and it has been involved in a variety of efforts. This is being spurred by increasing social demands, including the roll out of the new administration's Challenge 25 campaign. For example, in 2009, the company installed inverters on the air conditioners at its number 2 plant, thereby optimizing operating energy.

Clean Movement at JAE Group Companies
JAE Group companies are participating in local "clean movements" around their plants.

●JAE Oregon
JAE Oregon has pursued such targets as reducing the waste generated by the plating process, reducing industrial wastewater, and cutting energy usage. To cut its energy usage, the company changed the configuration of its air hoses on drying machines used for molding materials, thereby allowing it to reuse the air that used to be vented to the outside. This resulted in a reduction in the amount of energy the company used.

●JAE Taiwan

JAE Taiwan has mainly pursued measures to conserve resources and save energy. It has been promoting the recovery and reuse of packaging materials and the reduction of water use as measures for conserving resources. To save energy, the company has been pursing efforts such as closely managing air conditioning and lighting and preventing the leakage of compressed air used in production.

●JAE Philippines

In FY 2009, JAE Philippines' efforts focused on saving energy and conserving water. To conserve water, the company further pursued the full-flush/half-flush conversion of toilets that it had been undertaking and modified sink faucets so that they shut off automatically. It is also moving water supply lines above ground to make it easier to find leaks. To save energy, the company is trying to cut the amount of power used for air conditioning.

●JAE Wuxi

In FY 2009, JAE Wuxi pursued measures to save energy and deal with hazardous materials. To save energy, the company is cutting the amount of power used for air conditioning and lighting. The energy efficiency of air conditioners is being improved by conducting appropriate maintenance and increasing pipe insulation. Furthermore, management is being strengthened by appointing people in charge of air-conditioning use. As for lighting, the company is increasing the number of fluorescent bulbs that light according to the time of day and weather conditions and adjusting the brightness level per work area.

●JAE Wujang

The targets pursued by JAE Wujang were resource conservation, energy conservation, waste reduction, and green procurement. In particular, the company's energy conservation measures include thorough management and efficiency improvement for lighting, rationalization of compressor operation, appropriate control of air-conditioning temperatures, and the adjustment of PC display brightness. These measures have allowed the company to cut the amount of energy it uses.
