Environmental Report 2011

Building a More Sustainable Society

The Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami

The JAE Group would like to take this opportunity to offer our condolences to the victims of the devastating 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. We sincerely hope that the recovery will be a speedy one.

JAE's production sites in the Tohoku region also suffered from this unprecedented disaster, but thanks to the efforts of all concerned, we were able to quickly resume operations. We are extremely grateful for all the support we received during this challenging time.

Environmental Management

The JAE Group's environmental policy states that the group "will contribute to the attainment of a prosperous, sustainable society by fulfilling its corporate social responsibility through environmentally friendly business activities and respect for the natural environment and biodiversity." Specifically, we are pursuing a variety of environmental initiatives, including energy-saving measures, efficient use of raw materials and chemical substances, emissions controls, and pollution prevention. We are working hard simultaneously to protect the environment and create the business success needed to make our environmental efforts sustainable.

Status Report on JAE's Environmental Activities

JAE's efforts to contribute to the fight against climate change have resulted in a cut in CO2 emissions through the promotion of activities that are based on teaching environmental awareness, production-related measures, and plant facility-related measures. In FY 2010, JAE expanded its grassroots campaign, in addition to energy-saving activities, and launched activities to broaden the base so that it includes not only activities within the company, but employee households as well.
The JAE Group as a whole is pursuing the following two efforts as a gauge of its activities: meeting the common target of the electrical/electronic industries (a 35% reduction from FY 1990 in average emissions per unit of real sales); and the Tokyo Cap-and-Trade Program at the Akishima Plant, the Group's production base in Tokyo (an average 6% reduction for the first plan period from FY 2010 to FY 2014). Energy conservation will be essential in the summer, especially considering the lingering effects of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. The Group will deploy even more aggressive energy-saving efforts, recognizing that it is possible both to grow the business and save energy.
The Group also understands the importance of preventing soil and groundwater contamination as a part of the fight against environmental pollution. To that end, in FY 2010, it is pursuing measures to assess the pollution risks of facilities that use chemical substances. Based on assessment results, underground pipelines are being moved to the surface and an FRP coating is being applied to underground tanks. These and other measures are leading to improved facilities.
It is also necessary to popularize products with low environment impact in order to achieve a sustainable society. The JAE Group is contributing to reductions in society's overall environment impact by focusing its efforts on developing products that realize energy savings and resource conservation and do not contain hazardous substances, as well as offering renewable energy-related equipment and products for use in hybrid automobiles.

Committed to Biodiversity

The JAE Group Forest, which was opened in Okutama-machi, Tokyo in June 2004 for the purpose of protecting the forest and conserving it as a watershed, helps to improve employees' awareness about the environment by giving them opportunities to participate in tree planting and the clearing of undergrowth. Protecting forests and water sources helps countless forms of life thrive, and in addition to this new approach to securing biodiversity, JAE is positioning this program as a symbol of its environmental policies.
We will continue to produce environmentally friendly products and promote environmental activities that increase plant life and protect living creatures, and we would like to ask for your support in these efforts.
