Environmental Report 2011

Setting Targets and Evaluating Results

In August 2005, the JAE Group integrated its domestic environmental management systems into a single, multi-site system that sets targets and objectives for the entire JAE Group, while taking into consideration the unique initiatives implemented at each site.

Overview of FY 2010

In FY 2010, the six targets of measures against climate change, increasing green procurement, reducing raw materials use, reducing chemical substances, reducing waste material, and lessening environmental impacts were raised as the environmental goals of the JAE Group. Overall, the targets were achieved. The common target set by four electric/electronics organizations for reduction in average CO2 emissions per unit of real sales, which is one of the targets in the fight against climate change, was achieved, but external factors, including the impact of the strong yen and 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, caused us to fall just slightly short of our goals, although our target achievement rate was still 98%. The following table shows the figures in detail.
ctivity Objective Target Results Evaluation (note)
Progress with measures against climate change Reduction in average CO2 emissions per unit of real sales
(1990 level)
40%
(common target of four electrical/electronics organizations: 35%)
△39%
Reducing CO2 emissions caused by energy usage 2,828 tons-CO2 or more 3,345 tons-CO2
Curbing CO2 emissions caused by materials production by cutting materials usage 473 tons-CO2 or more 704 tons-CO2
Promotion of green procurement Checking of environmental quality at suppliers 196 companies or more 224 companies
Reduction of raw materials use Reduction of the amount of metal used as a target value of number of items for which to implement metal conservation (HAE) 35 items or more 35 items
Reduce use of chemical substances Reduction in amount of metal used in 12 select products (JAE) 12 products 12 products
Reduction in organic solvents by optimizing production process and improving cleaning process (JAE) Reduction of 10% or more 10%
Reduction in deleterious substances by wastewater recycling system (HAE) Reduction of 18 tons or more 19 tons
Reduction in amount of cleaning fluid and press lubricant purchased (YAE) 7,064 kg or less 2,101 kg
Reduction in amount of cleaning fluid used (FAE) 96 kg or less 30 kg
Reduction in amount of organic solvent used by changing cleaning method (SAE) Reduction of 25% or more 25%
Reduce waste materials Reduction in amount of waste plastics through recovery of valuable plastics (JAE) 1,860 kg or less 591 kg
Improvement of recovery of valuable molding waste (HAE) 67% or more 79%
Reduction in amount of mixed waste plastic by sorting and recycling (YAE) 32 tons or less 17 tons
Reduction in amount of waste by lowering percentage of product's defects (SAE) Reduction of waste by 48% or more 79%
Reduce environmental impact by promoting eco-friendly designs Confirm environmental compatibility of newly developed products and applied it to designs (JAE) 100% implementation 100% implementation
Promote resource conservation and energy-saving designs for existing products (JAE) Reduction of 5% or more 26%
Reduce weight of molds for new additions/updates/expansions. 18% or more 28%
Note: In the above table, "○" indicates 100% attainment of target value, while "△" indicates an attainment of 90% or less.

Future Efforts

In FY 2011, the JAE Group has set the same environmental activity areas across the group as in FY 2010 and is now working to attain targets in each area.

Activity Target/Plan Sites
Measures against climate change Reduction in average CO2 emissions per unit of real sales (1990 level) All Sites
Reduction by measures against CO2 emissions caused by energy usage
Curbing CO2 emissions caused by materials production by cutting materials usage
Reduce use of materials Reduction of the amount of metal used HAE
Reduce use of chemical substances Select three items at each site and aim for 10% cuts All Sites
Reduce waste materials Enable recycling for cleaning fluids, promote recovery of valuable waste plastics, reduce defect rates, etc.
Practice green procurement Check environmental quality at suppliers
Reduce environmental impacts by promoting eco-friendly designs Achieve 100% environment database registration, reduce environmental impacts through resource conservation, energy conservation, long life, and compact designs JAE/YAE
