Environmental Report 2018

Building a Sustainable World Tsutomu Onohara, President

Environmental Management

At the JAE Group, we see the conditions the world faces as a shared challenge consisting of life-threatening global environmental problems caused by abnormal weather, natural disasters, and proliferating weapons of mass destruction and cyber-attacks. Along with rapid political and economic change, ecological destruction including abnormal weather such as heavy rain, heat waves, and heavy snowfall, and the floods that accompany them, not to mention the related agricultural damage, are reported every year.
We recognize that we must strive to stay in step with global trends like the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement, which were both adopted as a strong response to these urgent global challenges.
As a good corporate citizen that benefits from the global environment, the JAE Group is committed to reducing the environmental impact generated by its business activities, and helping to build a safe, secure, prosperous, and sustainable world by rapidly delivering products that support our customers’ environment-related businesses.

Environmental Activities

The JAE Group’s corporate social responsibilities (CSR) involve complying with relevant laws and regulations and fully accounting for the environmental impact of its business activities. Going beyond our basic commitment at the JAE Group to never pollute, we have also defined our environmental policy in terms of solving the environmental challenges facing the natural world, such as eliminating pollution and helping to address climate change and preserve biodiversity.
Efforts are underway worldwide to address one of the social issues closely related to the environment, “Sustainable water resource management,” which was specifically included in 2015 at the United Nations in SDG 6 “Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.” In 2004, the JAE Group participated in a corporate-supported profit-sharing afforestation project for planting a forest to preserve a water source forest. The project involved growing a forest on a bare mountain in the town of Okutama in the Tokyo metropolitan area. To this day, the JAE Group Forest serves as a symbol of environmental management. In addition, the rainwater infiltration tank installed at the Akishima Plant contributes to disaster prevention and environmental management of water resources, such as the prevention of flooding of neighboring roads due to heavy rain, and watershed replenishment.
Our measures to fight climate change are focused on production-related energy with a high usage ratio, and we constantly work to effectively use energy, from production to distribution. To that end, we have insulated equipment and taken measures to prevent the leakage of compressed air, upgraded to efficient air conditioning equipment and LED lighting in new and existing plants, raised the efficiency of production processes, pursued a modal shift and conducted joint pickup and delivery.
Other initiatives we are taking to reduce the Group’s environmental impact throughout the business are ensuring thorough adherence to environmental regulations, promoting green procurement, designing eco-friendly products, and reducing chemical substances and waste materials.

Key topics we are addressing include the proper management of waste and environmental safety assessment of chemical substances. In properly managing waste, we have focused on sharing information and fostering mutual understanding with our waste disposal contractors. Sharing information using communication tools to develop a checklist, such as on the scale and capacity of processing facilities, maintenance and management status, recycling performance, as well as the environmental initiatives of contractors, makes for proper disposal of waste and contributes to the development of new resource recycling.
A safety environmental assessment is responsible for assessing occupational safety and the environment during various internal audits throughout the product life cycle, from raw material procurement, design and production to usage and disposal. On the environmental side, we are assessing measures to prevent soil and air pollution caused by leakage or evaporation, to ensure the adequacy of facility management, and ascertain the status of permit and license acquisition, and then converting this assessment system into electronic format. We are promoting the cross-company roll-out of mandatory measures and management methods and more reliably preventing environmental impact and pollution.
The JAE Group will contribute to the development of a sustainable world by reducing the environmental impact of its corporate activities, developing products that contain no harmful substances, and fostering their application in the environmentally friendly products of our customers. The hands-on learning experience in forest preservation that continues every year at the JAE Group Forest is helping to foster the environmental awareness which is at the foundation of all of our efforts, and we will continue to care for the forest as a symbol of environmental management.
The JAE Group will strive to balance both corporate activities and environmental protection by practicing environmentally friendly manufacturing.
In closing, please let me request your continued understanding and support.
