In-Vehicle AOC (Active Optical Cable) Prototype Development

January 7, 2025

JAE has developed a prototype in-vehicle Active Optical Cable (AOC) to address noise countermeasures in critical automotive networks related to safety within the automotive technology trend of zonal architecture.

In-Vehicle AOC Prototype

Overview

Currently, EVs have already implemented zonal architecture, which is becoming a future technological trend in in-vehicle networks, and various car manufacturers are also considering its implementation.
In this zonal architecture, the data collected is used by AI to make decisions, resulting in large data volumes. Moreover, disturbances, loss, or delays in data caused by noise can significantly impact the safety of the in-vehicle network. Therefore, fiber optical transmission that minimizes the effects of noise and enables high-capacity, long-distance transmission is being researched.
In light of this background, JAE has developed a prototype of an in-vehicle AOC ideal for fiber optical transmission in this in-vehicle network. To make this compatible with the in-vehicle requirement of 105 deg. C, we propose using a quantum dot laser as the light source for a fiber optical transmission network that is usable in high-temperature environments.
These prototype samples will be provided along with evaluation boards, and starting in February, we will begin lending them to car manufacturers and ECU manufacturers who wish to evaluate them. After the samples are evaluated, we will collect answers via a survey. Based on the results, we will begin considering the specifications for mass production, aiming for further standardization.
Additionally, this prototype will be showcased at DesignCon 2025 to be held in the United States from January 28, 2025, as well as at the MWC Barcelona 2025 Japan Pavilion, which will take place in Spain from March 3, 2025.
