Environmental Report 2013

Setting Targets and Evaluating Results

In an effort to lower its environmental impact and promote the production of environmentally friendly products, the JAE Group is working under ISO14001 multi-site certification. Goals and targets have been set for domestic Group companies while at the same time respecting the uniqueness of each site. To cut energy usage, the Group continued into FY 2012 its response to the effects of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, and went even further by converting from compressed air to vacuum pumps at factories and from oil-fired boilers to air conditioning, thereby operating at greater efficiency and achieving targets to a wide degree. The following table shows the primary activities.
Note that the letters in parentheses, such as JAE, are abbreviations denoting sites that carried out the activity in question.
Activity Objective Target Results Evaluation (note)
Progress with measures against climate change Reduction of CO2emissions per unit of real sales
(1990 level)
42% 29% Note 1
Reduction of CO2emissions caused by energy usage 4,266 tons-CO2 or more 5,347 tons-CO2
Reduction of CO2emissions caused by materials production by cutting materials usag 1,029 tons-CO2
or more
1,797 tons-CO2
Promotion of green procurement Checking of environmental quality at suppliers 214 companies or more 240 companies
Reduce environmental impact by promoting eco-friendly designs Reduction in energy consumption through energy-saving designs when developing derivative products (JAE) 15% or more reduction 38%
Weight reduction of new dies (YAE) 20% or more 23%
Reduce use of chemical substances and raw materials Reduction of the amount of metal used through improvements to the gold plating process (JAE) 10% or more reduction 18%
Reduction of organic solvent use through efficiency improvements in production processes and reuse (JAE) 10% or more reduction Average 49%
Reduction of chemical use through improvements in deionized water units (HAE) 41 ton or more reduction 43 tons
Reduction of cleaning fluid purchases through extension of the replacement cycle and other means (YAE) 4kg or more reduction 21kg
Reduction of cleaning agent usage for machining (SAE) 10% or more reduction 10%
Reduce waste materials Reduction of glass sludge through an improved manufacturing process (JAE) 50kg or less 40kg
Reduction of waste through reduction in defects (HAE) 410kg or more reduction 868kg
Reduction of amount of mixed waste plastic by sorting and recycling (YAE) 2 tons or less 12 tons
Reduction of amount of waste by lowering percentage of product's defects (SAE) 64% or more reduction 64%
Note 1 (About 29% reduction per unit): This is the result of the equivalency factor for CO2emissions, which worsened due to the shift in energy source following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. If the conventional equivalency factor had been used, there would have been a 47% reduction, which would have largely achieved the target.
